Autistic people often deal with autism related food issues which create barriers to eating. These can be due to sensory issues, digestive issues or anxiety. In this video I’m discussing my food issues. Most of them are completely illogical, but still they stop me from eating!
I hope you find this video useful.
Thanks for this, it is really useful. My daughter who is 18 and has ASD has real issues with food. She has a limited range of safe foods she will eat. For her it is sensory issues to do with texture and smell. She really dislikes eating out, but will tolerate certain chain restaurants as she knows what to expect. She has a diagnosis of ARFID. This helped her understand why she eats the way she does and empowered her to be more forthright in expressing her views towards food and eating out. She is also starting to suffer with digestive issues, which I think might be gluten related (my husband is celiac and I am gluten intolerant). However as her diet is largely white, carbohydrates she is reluctant to modify it. She has stated if she could take a pill instead of food she would. She does not really recognise hunger and has to be reminded to eat. I hope you find a solution to your digestive issues soon.
