Autism and special interests. Special interests are an important part of many autistic people’s lives. A special interest is different from a hobby, a hobby can be put to one side when life gets busy and it’s no big deal. But for an autistic person their special interest is vital to their wellbeing.

Autism and Special interests add a lot of value to an autistic persons life. They are a way to gain balance in what can seem like a very chaotic world. They help us to regulate, and stay calm.

Special interests can also help with self esteem and a sense of value in the world. As autistic people tend to get very good at their special interests they help us to see that we have skills and a place in the world.
